Sweeney Todd, opened on Broadway in 1979, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical; the original character, Sweeney Todd, hails from a Victorian penny dreadful, or serialized story, called “The String of Pearls,” first published in 1847-1848, but takes place in 1785. The musical was based on the 1970 play of the same title by Christopher Bond. It continues to be revived in many productions throughout the world and a film adaptation produced in 2007.
